2016 Shuttered Haunted Attractions

9/28/2016

A few CNY haunts have "boarded up" the windows for at least this season.

The Haunted Attraction business is a tough one. Even when the lines are long and an attraction is a success, the reality is, the work and time involved in creating an immersive live production is far more than you might expect.

Many work on their attraction year round, others begin in the spring, or closer to the fall... But any set-back can unfortunately have a ripple effect.

Listed Alphabetically

The Abandoned

Produced by the Canastota Fire Dept. The Abandoned is a multiple-attraction indoor walk-through haunt. They've won our "Non-Profit" award in the past, and their team always puts a lot of heart into what they do.

In 2016 , the Canastota Fire Department took on a new community project set for mid-August in the same location. Considering this, work schedules of the core crew, and the set-up time required to create The Abandoned, it just wasn't in the cards this year.

They've assured us they'll be returning next year, so we look forward to their return, and wish them a happy Halloween season!

CMC's Haunted House

Last year, a lot of haunt-fans in the community were disappointed when CMC's didn't open. It's truly one of the areas favorite haunts. Put on by the CMC Dance Company in Cicero, NY, their Haunted Attraction is a fund raiser for the dance school. Staffed largely by dance students and active parents, the haunt took place in a large old barn on the property and the tour meandered through the inside, and partially outside behind the barn. Full of screams and well placed scares, CMC's had a different "theme" to look forward to each year.

Sadly, for a second year in a row, they will remain shuttered due to an illness in the family.

We wish them a speedy recovery, and hope they'll be able to return to the screams next year.

Halloweekends at Sylvan Beach Amusement Park

Halloweekends consisted of the fun "Blood Bath" Haunted House, the dark-ride "Scream-Land", and a hauntingly decorated amusement park complete with rides, zombies and monsters walking around. It was a fun destination, with a lot to do on-site for an evening of fear and fun.

Unfortunately for 2016, the ownership has let us know they are "sitting this year out of the Halloween fun" and regrouping for 2017.

Maybe they'll come back even bigger and better!? All the best to the folks who made Halloweekends happen. We look forward to your return.

The Haunting of Turtle Cove Resort

This is an attraction we haven't had the pleasure of visiting yet, as 2015 was their first year open. Turtle Cove is a "resort and marina" on Lake Ontario about an hour from Syracuse.

Last year they advertised their attraction on Scarycuse and it looked promising, but alas, their Facebook page (which appears to be the main online presence for the Attraction), recently posted that the "Haunted Resort Closed for 2016, See you in 2017"

We'll see if they make another go of it next year. We hope to check them out and wish 'em luck.
